The Cleveland Browns have once again shuffled the deck in terms of their quarterback situation this offseason, and they’re apparently not through just yet. With veteran Drew Stanton joining a Browns team that already has Tyrod Taylor and will likely pick a top quarterback later in the draft, Cleveland is now expected to shop Cody Kessler.

Kessler, 24, was a third-round pick by the Browns in 2016 coming out of USC. He ended up starting eight games during his rookie year and played nine games overall. He went 0-8 as a starter but still racked up some respectable numbers with 1,380 yards, six touchdowns, two interceptions, and a 92.3 passer rating.

Despite his solid rookie year, Kessler was bumped down to third string last year as the team drafted DeShone Kizer in the second round to take over as the starting quarterback. And when the rookie strugged, they called on Kevin Hogan to take over instead of Kessler, who appeared in just three games.

The fact that the Browns played Hogan over Kessler last season should have provided a significant hint that Kessler didn’t have much of a future in Cleveland. Their move to trade away DeShone Kizer after just one season was also an indication that they were going to start with a clean slate at quarterback.

Given the promise Kessler showed at times during his rookie year, there should be at least some teams interested in taking him on as a possible backup QB. However, the chances of him starting multiple games like in his rookie year anytime in the near future seem highly unlikely.
