Days removed from the conclusion of the 2022 NFL Draft and multiple veteran players still remain unsigned in free agency, including Jadeveon Clowney. The three-time Pro Bowler featured for the Browns last season and has not yet found a home in the NFL for the 2022 campaign.
On the Browns’ part, they remain “pretty confident” that they will be able to re-sign Clowney, as noted by Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer. However, Browns team officials are keeping a watch on a matter that could prevent them from coming to terms with the pass rusher on a free agent deal.
Breer further added that “if a team in the South near where the South Carolina native grew up came calling,” it may mean that Clowney could very well say his final goodbyes to the Browns and make a move elsewhere for the fourth straight offseason. Clowney grew up in Rock Hill, South Carolina and then went on to play at the University of South Carolina, where he made a name for himself as one of the more proficient pass rushers in the SEC over the 2010s.
Overall, the Carolina Panthers could possibly emerge as a suitor for Clowney if they “show real interest” in signing him.
The Browns have bolstered their defensive line over the past months, from trading for now-former New England Patriots defensive end Chase Winovich to drafting former UAB standout Alex Wright. In the big picture, Browns general manager Andrew Berry did recently note that the team has not completely ruled out the possibility of bringing back Clowney for at least one more season.
“We will continue to keep our thumb on the pulse of all of the veteran markets,” Berry said. “We think highly of JD. Like I said, we will take our breath tomorrow, and we will be back at it with roster building next week.”
Clowney has recorded a combined 21.0 sacks and 38 tackles for loss in his last four seasons, which include his 9.0 sacks campaign in the 2021 regular season with the Browns. At this point in his career, he may still have plenty left in the tank to put out for vintage performances over a season.
