Boston Bruins fans can enjoy watching Charlie McAvoy for basically the next decade.

Emily Kaplan of ESPN reported on Friday that McAvoy agreed to a massive eight-year, $76 million contract extension that will keep him in Boston through the 2029-30 season. The Bruins later confirmed the deal, which makes the 23-year-old one of the highest-paid defensemen in the NHL—not to mention the recipient of the most lucrative contract in team history.

McAvoy's teammates sure seemed excited about the news.

Boston general manager Don Sweeney spoke glowingly of McAvoy's impact on the Bruins earlier this week.

“We think highly of him both as a player and as a person,” he said of McAvoy, per ESPN. “He's growing into a leadership role, he's been included in that leadership group, and hopefully that's an indication that Charlie's grown into the person, both as a leader as a player, that we all hoped he would be.”

A product of Boston University, McAvoy was the No. 14 overall pick of the 2016 draft. A fixture for the Bruins since he was a rookie, McAvoy posted a career season in 2020-21, leading them in ice time while registering 25 assists in just 51 games played.

Boston opens the 2021-22 regular season at home on Saturday against the Dallas Stars.
