With the return of Tom Brady back to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, there are a few players they are going to also want to either try to keep in their organization or sign during the 2022 NFL free agency period. The Buccaneers got their star quarterback back, which was their biggest need heading into free agency, but there's more work to be done.
Because they were able to keep Brady, it most likely means they will be able to get some star players to come to Tampa Bay, and hopefully retain some of their key stars. There isn't much this Buccaneers team needs to improve on, but the best can always get better.
Let's take a look at three players the Buccaneers must target in 2022 NFL free agency.
Buccaneers Free Agency Targets
Bringing back Leonard Fournette might not be the No. 1 move the Buccaneers are going to try to pull off now, but it's something that should interest them. Whenever you have a guy like Tom Brady out there, your run game is usually going to be strong just because the defense has to worry about what Brady is going to do at every moment.
Coming out of college, Fournette was arguably one of the best prospects of all time, and while he certainly hasn't exceeded those expectations by any means, he started showing with the Buccaneers a season ago that he could be that guy he was supposed to be.
Last season, Fournette didn't have a ridiculously crazy year, but he was still able to rush for 812 yards and eight touchdowns. He also had 454 receiving yards and two touchdowns in the air. Playoff Lenny was also key during the Super Bowl run, and it looks like he has interest in returning right when it seemed like he would be going elsewhere. That is almost certainly thanks to Brady.
Allen Robinson is an interesting name to pair with Tom Brady. Last season, he did not have the season that anybody was expecting him to, but most of that can be contributed to the fact that he had to play with a rookie quarterback and Matt Nagy.
Coming into the 2021 season, people expected that Robinson was not only going to be an elite receiver for the Bears, but possibly a top-five wide receiver in all of football. To say the least, he did not live up to those expectations, as he only finished with one touchdown and 38 receptions for 410 yards.
Still, one has to imagine that playing with Brady would rejuvenate Robinson. The wideout is a big body who runs good routes and can go up and make plays. With Antonio Brown gone and Chris Godwin recovering from a torn ACL, Tampa Bay could use another big-time wideout.
Everybody has seen throughout Brady's career that when he has an average to above-average wide receiver, he's going to make those guys look the best they ever have in their careers. So, bringing in somebody like Robinson as another weapon for Brady makes some sense if it works financially.
1. Marcus Williams
Marcus Williams is another really interesting name for this Buccaneers team after their defense took a step back in 2021 from the Super Bowl-winning campaign. They could use some help in their secondary, so bringing in somebody like Williams would be a good idea.
When also factoring in that the Buccaneers are going to have to fill a few of those roles, why not go out there and get the best possible safety on the market? Williams does have a tendency at times of getting burned just trying to do a little too much, but at the end of the day, he is an elite safety who can really help this team and solidify their defense.
