A new report suggests that offensive tackle Donovan Smith of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is going to have his contract extended, or he'll be franchise-tagged.

For what it's worth, it's going to be worth it to Donovan Smith either way. Even though he officially enters free agency in a few weeks, he told the Tampa Bay Times that he'd love nothing more than to stay where he is, especially with Bruce Arians helming the team.

“I hope so. That’s the thing, you never know. But I love Tampa. The community, teammates, everybody there. I’ve kind of established myself there, so why not? I’m actually really excited. I sat down with B.A. [Bruce Arians, head coach] for about 15-20 minutes just chopping it up, and the vibe around the facility is just amazing. Everybody is upbeat and excited and to see that aura come from one person is crazy. I love it, and I just can’t wait to get out there.”

Donovan Smith has started all 64 games since Tampa Bay drafted him four years ago, and the Bucs aren’t planning to let him get away.

NBC Sports explains how much this decision could be worth:

“The franchise tag for offensive linemen this year is projected to be a little over $14 million, which is steep, and the Buccaneers don’t have a lot of cap space. That would be an incentive for the team to work out a deal that would give Smith more money upfront but spread the cap hit out to future seasons.”
