Basketball is apparently just a side job for the two-time reigning NBA MVP. Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo was approached by a curious onlooker marveling at his Rolls Royce Cullinan. The inquisitive individual asked what the “Greek Freak” did for a living, to which he humorously replied “Bitcoin.”

Giannis Antetokounmpo obviously said this in jest, but athletes have actually had some success investing in Bitcoin.

Former Carolina Panthers offensive tackle Russell Okung invested half his salary in Bitcoin back in December of 2020. Said investment, by some estimations, ultimately made Okung the highest-paid player in the entire league, per Bitcoin:

For instance, when BTC hit $44k, the half of his contract that is paid in BTC climbed to $10.59 million, at $56k+ his half turned into more than his entire quoted salary. As far as 2020 NFL salary stats are concerned, Okung has entered the top five position. However, the NFL has recently decided to cap the league’s salaries at $180 million and a ball player’s contract could change in 2021. Because the Carolina Panthers’ offensive tackle (OT) gets half of his salary in BTC, many proponents think of him as the highest-paid player in the NFL and not just ahead of the highest-paid OTs.

Who knows, maybe Giannis Antetokounmpo will someday follow Okung's lead in the cryptocurrency game. For now, however, he is pretty good at his day job.

The 26-year-old is averaging 28.8 points, 11.4 rebounds and 6.2 assists through his first 45 games, also shooting 56.5 percent from the field. His two-way excellence once again has the Bucks towards the top of the Eastern Conference, as Milwaukee is just 1.5 games back of the Philadelphia 76ers and Brooklyn Nets.
