The first practice of the season didn't go particular well for Chicago Bulls big man Wendell Carter Jr.

Carter Jr. suffered a sprained left ankle and will be day-to-day moving forward. Bulls rookie Daniel Gafford also suffered a right elbow hyperextension, per K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago.

Wendell Carter Jr. averaged 10.3 points, 7.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists last season in 44 games for the Bulls while shooting 48.5 percent from the field and 79.5 percent from the free-throw line. He had season-ending surgery on his thumb and surgery to repair an abdominal muscle injury this summer.

Carter Jr. is expected to start alongside Kris Dunn, Zach LaVine, Otto Porter and Lauri Markkanen. A sprained ankle isn't that big of a deal since it's the most common injury in basketball. However, this is not how the Bulls or Carter Jr. wanted training camp to begin.

Carter Jr. has all the tools to be an All-NBA defender for the Bulls. His offensive game is still very raw, but the kid is a hard worker who figures to get better over time.

Bulls head coach Jim Boylen told reporters on media day on Monday he wants Chicago to compete for a playoff spot this season. For that to happen, multiple players on the roster have to take their games to the next level. Health is also very important.
