The Washington Capitals fell just short of the Las Vegas Golden Knights in Wednesday night's overtime loss. However, that wasn't the biggest story of the game. Capitals star Alex Ovechkin, who enjoyed his ninth multi-goal game of the season, entered the NHL record books during the contest. Not only that, but Ovechkin joined good company, as he matched a feat accomplished by legend Wayne Gretzky, as reported by the Associated Press.

With two goals during a 4-3 overtime loss to the Knights, it marked the ninth time in Ovechkin’s career he scored 50 goals, tying Mike Bossy and Wayne Gretzky for most in NHL history.

“Obviously, it’s pretty good company,” said Ovechkin, the oldest player in NHL history to score 50 in a season. “Obviously lots of great memories, locker room, everything, hotel. It’s gonna stay here forever. Yeah, pretty fun moments.”

Not only did Ovechkin match Gretzky and the late Mike Bossy's record for the most 50-goal seasons in NHL history with nine, but he also became the oldest to score 50 in a season.

The Capitals star knows just how impressive of an achievement it is too, saying “obviously, it's pretty good company.” It's equally impressive just how good Ovechkin looks at the age of 36 as he is currently tied for third in the league in goals scored while placing 12th in points.

With 780 career goals, Ovechkin will continue to chase good company, as he trails only Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky on the NHL's all-time list.
