Gordon Hayward has gone through a roller coaster of a comeback season after sustaining a freak injury and missing an entire NBA season to recover from it. While the Boston Celtics forward disappointed at first, he has begun to integrate himself in his last few games, stringing together much better efforts.

Yet the Celtics have mirrored that up-and-down nature themselves, going through highs and lows and never really gaining much steady traction through 68 games this season:

“I think for everybody involved, it’s been a challenging season, for me individually as well as the team,” Hayward told Sam Amick of The Athletic. “It feels like we can beat anybody in this league on any given night. It also feels like we could lose to anybody on any given night. So that’s where we’ve got to be able to, come playoff time, get those stretches where we’re not playing very good basketball out and really just be more consistent.

“We’ve had good moments. We’ve had tough moments. I think for us, we want to be playing our best basketball come playoff time. It’s a new season then, so hopefully we can be doing that.”

Boston looked to be headed for a late-season tear after winning four of five games after a four-game losing skid, but a 140-115 loss to the LA Clippers put a halt to that. With only 14 games left in the season, the Celtics need to figure out what they really need to do to become the playoff contender they were last season.
