The Boston Celtics are expected to make things official with their brand new free agent acquisition Greg Monroe, as the big man traveled to Washington D.C. today to sign his new one-year, $5 million contract and possibly make his team debut against the Washington Wizards, according to A. Sherrod Blakely of NBC Sports Boston.

Monroe opted to join the Celtics, even after his hometown New Orleans Pelicans had offered him a starting job for the remainder of the season. The Pels could only offer $2.2 million to the big man, while the Celtics could more than double the amount, while they wouldn't commit to a starting spot just yet.

The 6-foot-11 big man out of Georgetown is on his third team this season, starting the season with the Milwaukee Bucks and later traded to the Phoenix Suns for point guard Eric Bledsoe.

Having managed a buyout from the Suns, Monroe was coveted by several teams, but chose the Eastern Conference leaders, now slated to be a part of the frontcourt rotation with Marcus Morris, Al Horford, and Aron Baynes.

While his minutes will be somewhat of a surprise factor, the Celtics are surely not paying $5 million for a player to warm the bench, likely looking for the versatile big man to fill in at both spots for Brad Stevens' team.

The Celtics recently got their starting point guard Kyrie Irving back on the floor, but suffered a 111-91 loss against the Toronto Raptors last night, now slated for another tough clash against the rival Wizards.
