Last week, news broke that Khalil Mack was headed to the Los Angeles Chargers. The trade between the Chargers and the Chicago Bears became official on Wednesday with the start of the new league year. However, the team had a few kinks to sort out regarding the outside linebacker's contract.

The Chargers restructured Mack's contract, turning $13.5 million of his 2022 pay into a signing bonus. NFL insider Field Yates tweeted the news Friday morning.

As Yates notes, this move created $9 million in cap space for Los Angeles.

In the blockbuster trade, the Chargers received Mack in exchange for a 2022 second-round pick and a 2023 sixth-round pick.

According to Spotrac, Mack signed a six-year, $141 million contract with the Bears. The deal included a $34 million signing bonus, $90 million guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $23.5 million.

As a result of the trade, the Chargers took on the final three years of the contract. Meanwhile, the Bears gained $6.15 million in cap space in 2022, $28.5 million in 2023, and $23.25 million in 2024, according to Bears senior writer Larry Mayer.

The 31-year-old began his career with the Oakland Raiders in 2014 before joining the Bears in 2018. Mack has become a highly decorated NFL athlete throughout his eight seasons in the league. The 2016 NFL Defensive Player of the Year is a three-time First-team All-Pro, 2020 Second-team All-Pro, and a six-time Pro-Bowler. One of the only things missing from his list of NFL accomplishments is a Super Bowl championship.
