The Kansas City Chiefs are reaping the benefits of the investment they made in quarterback Patrick Mahomes. Head coach Andy Reid admits it was one that almost did not come to fruition.

The Chiefs executed a trade with the Buffalo Bills to move up and select Mahomes with the 10th overall pick. According to ESPN's Adam Teicher, Reid says the heavy interest from other teams made it difficult for them to pull the trigger on a deal at first:

“It was pretty tense in [the draft room] for a little bit because we knew there were a couple other teams trying to get him,” coach Andy Reid said. “There was a bit of tension, but everyone was excited when it happened. It wasn't one of those deals where half the room was in on him and half wasn't. Everybody was in on this kid and liked him, so everyone was pretty fired up.”

Although Mahomes had received his fair share of mixed reviews, there seemed to be no question about his status as a first-rounder. It appears there were a number of potential landing spots for him later in the round. However, the Chiefs were able to capitalize on the Bills' willingness to trade back. He was the second quarterback selected behind Mitchell Trubisky, whom the Chicago Bears also traded up for. It is safe to say that several teams regret not taking him early or attempting to make a trade of their own.

Perhaps the fact that Kansas City already had a viable starter on quarterback Alex Smith caused other teams to overlook them as a potential suitor. The move has already paid huge dividends for the franchise moving forward after Mahomes earned NFL MVP honors while leading his team to the AFC Conference Championship in his first full season as a starter.
