It is already the dawn of a new era for the Kansas City Chiefs with Alex Smith being traded away. But it appears the team is looking to make even bigger changes with the release of longtime linebacker Derrick Johnson. After the news broke, many shared their thoughts on Johnson on social media and with the press.

Former NFL executive Bill Polian shared his thoughts on Johnson in a radio spot, and he was highly complimentary of the ex-Chief.

Polian currently works as an NFL analyst for ESPN. But he made his name as an executive for the Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, and Indianapolis Colts. He helped the Bills make four consecutive Super Bowls. With his help, the Panthers nearly made the Super Bowl in their second year. Some of his decisions led to the Colts becoming a powerhouse in the 2000s.

So, clearly, he knows what he’s talking about when it comes to football.

The Chiefs announced on Tuesday that they would not be re-signing Johnson when his contract voids on March 14. The team was very complimentary of Johnson in its release announcing the move. But it was clear during the 2017 season that his time could be coming to an end when he started losing reps to Reggie Ragland and Kevin Pierre-Louis.

Johnson, who is 35, was a first-round pick for the Chiefs back in 2005. Over the years, he has developed into one of the premier linebackers in the NFL. But, like all players, age appears to be catching up with him. He played in 15 games this season and made 71 tackles. The year before he made 90 in 13 games. He had made over 100 in the previous five in which he played most of the season.

As could be expected, he does not want to quit playing just yet. While he may not be a starter anymore, he could still give a team some very valuable depth.
