The Kansas City Chiefs were in unfamiliar territory during Super Bowl 56 weekend. Instead of playing in the big game, the team was forced to watch at home, as they were eliminated in the AFC Championship Game by the Cincinnati Bengals. After two straight Super Bowl appearances and a ring, this team faltered in their third year.

As Super Bowl 56 came to a close, Chiefs star defensive tackle Chris Jones had just a few words to say after the game.

Jones was one of the few bright spots on a Chiefs defense that regressed heavily this season. With the defense nearly falling apart across all three levels, Jones helped stabilize the defense during their ascent back to the top. However, he and the Chiefs failed to make an impact in the AFC Championship Game, as they only got 2 sacks on Joe Burrow all game.

This offseason will be a crucial moment for the Chiefs' future. With Patrick Mahomes' massive contract extension kicking in next year, the front office will have to be creative with their moves. Key pieces such as Tyrann Mathieu and Anthony Hitchens are the most likely victims of an incoming roster cut bonanza.

The Chiefs will definitely still be one of the favorites to make it out of the AFC next season. With Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Tyreek Hill on the same team, anything is possible. However, with both the Buffalo Bills and the Bengals making huge strides this season, and other AFC contenders getting healthy, the road to the Super Bowl is going to be a bumpy one for KC.
