The Kansas City Chiefs made quite the investment when they took quarterback Patrick Mahomes with the 10th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Many questioned the decision, considering the Chiefs already had a solid franchise quarterback in Alex Smith. However, Andy Reid recalled general manager Brett Veach's glowing praise of Mahomes, via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk:

“You knew he was going to be great. Brett Veach said it. He’s our General Manager. He said he’s the greatest player he’d ever seen,” the Chiefs head coach said on NFL Network. “That’s quite a tribute to the kid. Now that I’ve been around him, and you’ve watched him play, he’s pretty doggone good.”

It is safe to say that this is some heavy praise. Although it is still early in Mahomes' career for such titles, there is no question that the Chiefs wound up making the right decision.

The Chiefs had long struggled to get over the playoff hump with Smith under center. After spending his rookie year learning from sidelines, Mahomes wasted no time in helping to take this team to the next level by leading them to the AFC Championship in his first season as a starter and now a Super Bowl in only his second.

Although he may have flown under the radar coming into the league, Mahomes has now set the bar quite high for the Chiefs. He has now done a stellar job of following through on the hype that he generated when he first burst onto the scene as the centerpiece of the most high-powered offense in the NFL.
