Before Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was an MVP, he faced an uphill battle with his father, who tried to get him to quit playing football before he even had the chance to dazzle NFL fans everywhere.

Mahomes' father, Patrick Sr., who was an MLB pitcher for over a decade between 1992 and 2003, told TMZ Sports that he thought his son had a better shot of going pro in baseball or basketball than football, mainly because the University of Texas was recruiting the signal-caller to play defense:

“They were recruiting him as a safety,” said Patrick Sr. “And, I was telling him, ‘Why don't we quit this and let's just concentrate on the other two?'”

Patrick Sr. added that he thought he and his son were “wasting time with this football thing.”

Of course, Mahomes then ended up at Texas Tech, where he starred as a quarterback and ended up getting selected by the Chiefs with the 10th overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft.

Mahomes learned under Alex Smith during his first season, but, obviously, Kansas City saw immediate potential in Mahomes, trading Smith away to the Washington Redskins last offseason to open the door for Mahomes as the starter.

The 23-year-old went on to throw for 5,097 yards, a league-leading 50 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 66 percent of his passes and registering a passer rating of 113.8 en route to a Pro Bowl appearance and a First-Team All-Pro selection. On top of all of that, Mahomes earned the Most Valuable Player award.
