The Kansas City Chiefs managed to take care of the Miami Dolphins in the Wild Card Round of the NFL Playoffs on Saturday, but it didn't come without some pain for quarterback Patrick Mahomes. The two-time MVP had part of his helmet shatter after a hit but his manufacturer insisted the helmet did its job in -4 weather.

Via ESPN:

“While outer shell damage is not ideal, the ZERO2 helmet did its job of protecting Patrick Mahomes during a head-to-head impact during unprecedented cold temperatures,” VICIS said in a statement released on X. “The exclusive multi-layer technology employed in the VICIS ZERO2 helmet model utilizes a deformable outer shell, RFLX impact absorption layer, followed by a stiff inner shell. This design approach is similar to the crumple zone of modern cars, effectively absorbing and dispersing impact forces at the point of contact.

“Extreme conditions like those experienced in Saturday evening's NFL playoff game are bound to test the limits of even the highest performing products.”

Mahomes himself had an interesting reaction to the situation but didn't sound too worried post-game:

“I'm sure it had to do with it being really cold,” Mahomes said. “I didn't know what happened in the moment, but I got in the huddle and everybody was telling me.

“It was a first for me.”

Patrick Mahomes found a replacement helmet and ultimately got it to fit right after working with equipment managers. Despite the horrific weather, the signal-caller had a relatively efficient day, completing 23 of 41 passes for 262 yards and a touchdown.

Next time, the Chiefs will be hoping to have his backup helmet warm and ready for wear. Since it was frozen, Mahomes had a hard time putting it on. KC faces the Buffalo Bills on Sunday in the Divisional Round.
