Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Sammy Watkins is unlikely to play in Week 10 vs. the Arizona Cardinals due to a foot injury, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Watkins’ status had been in doubt since earlier this week when he had an MRI after experiencing pain in his foot. Watkins underwent foot surgery in 2016, which saw him miss half the season.

Luckily, Watkins’ absence is more of a precautionary measure as opposed to a sign that it is a serious injury and that he’ll likely be fine for next week.

That’s great news for the Chiefs, who have a big matchup against Watkins’ former team, the Los Angeles Rams, in Week 11 in Mexico and have a bye the following week. Watkins’ chances of playing in that Rams game should be better as he gets more time to recover by sitting out against Arizona.

Watkins is having a strong debut season with the Chiefs. He’s racked up 39 catches for 515 yards and three touchdowns in nine games as the third receiving option behind Tyreek Hill and Travis Kelce in the Chiefs’ league-leading offense. Running back Kareem Hunt is also very capable of being a part of the receiving game.

Even with Watkins, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs should still have more than enough playmakers on offense to put points up against the struggling Cardinals at home on Sunday. They should be able to take care of business and improve to 9-1 ahead of their matchup with the Rams, which Watkins will hopefully be ready for.
