Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Kadarius Toney was dealt a crushing blow before training camp began on Sunday, leaving the field with an apparent knee injury. While Andy Reid initially said that it was just a “tweak” that happened while returning punts, Travis Kelce's latest comments on Toney are slightly concerning.

Via Alex Gold:

“Kelce says he’s crossing his fingers to get Toney back as soon as possible, whether it’s for the beginning of the season or a few weeks in. Andy Reid talks again tomorrow.”

A “tweak” shouldn't last into the 2023 season, therefore you'd have to think the injury could be a bit more serious than initially expected. Toney proved to be a massive piece for Kansas City after they acquired him via trade from the New York Giants last season, making a couple of crucial plays in their Super Bowl win over the Philadelphia Eagles and showing the glimpses of brilliance that made him a first-round pick in 2021.

With the Chiefs having let go of JuJu Smith-Schuster and Mecole Hardman in free agency, Kadarius Toney is expected to be a big part of the team's offense in 2023. He's never played more than nine games in a single season due to health issues. If Toney was actually available throughout the course of a whole campaign, especially with Patrick Mahomes throwing him passes, who knows what could be possible?

In seven contests for Kansas City last year, the former Florida Gator reeled in 14 catches for 171 yards and two touchdowns. One can only hope he's back in training camp before preseason begins.
