The Los Angeles Clippers not only acquired two superstars when they made moves to sign Kawhi Leonard and acquire Paul George, but they also catapulted themselves into instant NBA Championship contention. According to some NBA personnel, the moves the Clippers made were more than enough to make them the favorites to come away with the 2020 NBA title.

Speaking to Ben Golliver of the Washington Post during the NBA Summer League, some NBA personnel – including executives, coaches, and scouts – took part in an informal survey, where they were asked about the chances of next year. While many pegged the Clippers as the early favorites to win the title, the outlook on the league wasn’t as dire.

According to Golliver, the talk of the Clippers was “noticeably different” from that of the past few years, when most personnel had resigned themselves to the idea of the Golden State Warriors winning. Unlike that, it seems as if the Clippers may be the favorite for now, but things could certainly change throughout the season. Essentially, the Clippers aren’t viewed as an unstoppable juggernaut like Golden State had been.

The biggest reason for the Clippers being the favorite is their ability to match up well against anyone. With notoriously tough defenders in Kawhi Leonard, Patrick Beverley, and Paul George on the team, opposing teams will have a tough time when it comes to scoring. Of course, with the NBA more wide open then it has been in years past, anything can happen, and we’ve seen just this past year that the favorites don’t always win.
