On Monday afternoon, Tyronn Lue, Nicolas Batum, and the LA Clippers practiced for the first time since the All-Star break ended. Their first get-together to be able to walk through things, however, also coincided with an announcement Jamal Crawford made via social media.

After 20 years in the NBA, Crawford announced his retirement from the NBA on Monday. In a post on Twitter, Crawford said: “Goodbye to the game, all the spoils the adrenaline rush. Thank you basketball, I owe you everything…”

Of all the teams Jamal Crawford played for, he'll be most remembered for his time with the LA Clippers. Crawford won two Sixth Man of the Year awards under head coach Doc Rivers, helping the ‘Lob City' Clippers by bringing a steady voice, vet, and scorer off the bench.

One of Crawford's former teammates is Nicolas Batum. Batum and Crawford only played one season together with the Portland Trail Blazers back in the 2010-11 lockout season.

“This guy, he really loved the game of basketball,” Batum said of Crawford. “He's a true lover of the game. So talented. I had the chance to play one year with him in the lockout year, with the Blazers. But he was a great vet. I'd been in the league for three years at that point and he was always talking to me, like giving me advice, he was a great vet at that point, already.

For his career, Jamal Crawford averaged 14.6 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 3.4 assists in 1,337 career regular season games. He's tied for the most Sixth Man of the Year awards in NBA history with three along with Lou Willams. Crawford also notched 54 career four-points in his career, which leads the league by a mile.

“The way he plays, I mean, this guy's never been an All-Star but he clearly had the talent to be an All-Star multiple times. He's a three-time Sixth Man of the Year, always embraced that role. He could be a starter easy, but he always I think sacrificed himself wherever he went, for the best of the team. Like, this team I think took advantage of that because he was great, a phenomenon for this team, so I'm sad that he didn't have one more chance, could've reached 20,000 points, he was pretty close to get 20,000, so I think he could have done it, but I think he's happy where he is, with his family, he had a great career, I wish him the best.”

Tyronn Lue also spent time in Los Angeles around Jamal Crawford during those Lob City Clippers before being hired by the Cleveland Cavaliers. Lue has some fond memories of the former Sixth Man of the Year.

“All the 50 point games on different teams,” Lue said of his favorite Crawford memory. “All the Sixth Man of the Year awards, but just coming in out of Michigan as a freshman playing for the Bulls like you knew he was going to be an exciting player and he’s always been a tough cover for me when I played against him like just being 6-6, can shoot over the top of you, get his shot off anytime and so just seeing the job he’s done throughout his career has been phenomenal.”

Crawford played five seasons in Los Angeles, averaging 15.3 points, and 2.6 assists per game on 41 percent shooting.

“My first year coaching him here with the Clippers just having him on the team and the job he did and how he was professional about getting his work in every single day and he held guys accountable.”

The short-handed Clippers could've used a player like Jamal Crawford the last few months to help them avoid those signature scoring droughts. While that won't happen, the team is hopeful that Paul George and Norman Powell can rejoin them sometime in the near future.
