The Michigan State Spartans and Ohio State Buckeyes are both limping toward the NCAA Tournament. They will get there, but they won't be expected to do very much once they find a place in the bracket. College basketball odds experts would agree. When you consider a Michigan State Ohio State prediction, you have a lot of thinking to do, because neither team is inspiring much confidence at the moment, yet both teams have shown they can play really well on occasion.
Michigan State is a mystery. This team recently beat Purdue but has also lost at Penn State, gotten blown out by Rutgers, and recently was torched by Michigan, which is a bubble team. The Michigan State Ohio State odds are so hard to calculate because as mediocre as the Spartans have been for much of the season, they will play a great game every now and then to show everyone what they are capable of. They thrashed Big Ten champion Wisconsin on the road. They beat Loyola-Chicago and tested Baylor earlier in the season. Yet, they play so many poor games that it's hard to trust the Spartans.
Ohio State is much the same. The Buckeyes are every bit as mysterious and confusing as Michigan State is, something to absorb when preparing to make a Michigan State-Ohio State pick. The Buckeyes won on the road at Illinois last week, a result which significantly changed the Big Ten championship race and opened the door for Wisconsin to win the league title. Yet, if that win in Champaign seemed to indicate that Ohio State was ready to make a deep run in March, the next two games poured buckets of cold water over that theory. The Buckeyes were soundly defeated by Maryland on Sunday and by lowly Nebraska on Tuesday. OSU was not especially close in either game. The Buckeyes were down nine late in the Nebraska game. They briefly pulled within four points in the final minute but ultimately lost by eight. They could not have played much worse in their last two games. Like Michigan State, they are floundering in early March.

Why Michigan State Could Cover the Spread
The spread is six points, which is a sign of how little respect Michigan State has earned. It's fair to doubt MSU, but the flip side of this is that Ohio State is getting a lot of respect at minus-six points. That's a lot of points. Ohio State is not playing well enough to be favored by six points over any half-decent opponent right now.
Why Ohio State Could Cover the Spread
The Michigan State team which stumbled at Penn State and Rutgers, and then got smashed earlier this week by Michigan, can certainly get blown out by an Ohio State squad which will definitely be angry after the Nebraska and Maryland losses.

Ohio State is simply not playing well enough to deserve the status of a six-point favorite. OSU might very well win, but it will be close.
