Why Clemson Could Cover the Spread

The Clemson Tigers are getting hot at the right time, winning five of their last six games. The Tigers have won four straight, scoring at least 30 points in those four games. In their most recent win, Clemson beat tenth-ranked Wake Forest 48-27. The Tigers netted 543 total yards and held the Demon Deacons to 36 rushing yards. Offensively, Clemson is averaging 24.3 points and 350.5 yards per game. The offense has not been as explosive as in the past, mainly due to their subpar quarterback play. However, the Tigers offense has been rolling over the last few weeks and will face a South Carolina defense that allows 26.1 points per game to opponents.

Clemson's defense is the heartbeat of this football team. Without its stellar defense, the Tigers may be below .500 this season. The defense ranks tenth in the nation in opponent points per game (17.7) and 14th in opponent yards per game (328.2). Over their last 22 road games, the Tigers are 15-7 against the spread. In conference matchups, the Gamecocks are just 1-4 against the spread.

Why South Carolina Could Cover the Spread

The South Carolina Gamecocks are having an average season with a 6-5 record, current at fifth in the SEC East. They beat Auburn 21-17 last week at home and host Clemson in this week's conference matchup. Senior quarterback Jason Brown finished last week's game with 157 passing yards and three touchdowns. Offensively, the Gamecocks average 21.0 points and 321.1 yards per game. They rush the ball 53.4% of the time, favoring the ground game more than the passing game. ZaQuandre White has rushed for 561 yards and two touchdowns, while Kevin Harris has rushed for 465 yards and three touchdowns.

This Gamecock defense held solid offenses in Florida and Auburn to just 17 points in weeks past. They are 6th in the nation with 2.1 takeaways per game. They will need to slow down the Clemson offense that's been scoring a decent amount of points over the last few weeks. The defense gives up 26.1 points and 379.5 yards per game to opponents. The Gamecocks are 5-2 against the spread in their previous seven games at home against the Tigers.

Final Clemson-South Carolina Prediction & Pick

Clemson was probably the most overrated team in college football to start the season, yet it seems like they have found a nice spot late in the year. They are coming off a blowout win against a potent Wake Forest offense last week. They have dominated the Gamecocks in recent seasons and are going to have a huge advantage on the defensive side of the ball. South Carolina is on its third quarterback of the season, a weakness that will eventually catch up to them.

It's unlikely the Gamecocks will be able to keep up with the Tigers in this SEC matchup. Clemson is much more physical and athletic than South Carolina. Lay the points and bet the Tigers on Saturday.

FINAL CLEMSON-SOUTH CAROLINA PICK: Clemson -11.5
