Why Michigan State Could Cover the Spread

The Michigan State Spartans are having a season to remember as they are currently undefeated with an 8-0 record, ranking them 5th in the nation. The Spartans are coming off a big comeback win at Michigan last weekend. They outscored the Wolverines 23-10 in the second half to win by a score of 37-33 in East Lansing. Kenneth Walker III had a standout performance, racking up 197 rushing yards and five touchdowns. Michigan State's offense averages 33.6 points per game and 424.9 yards per game. They have been very effective on the ground this year. The Spartans rank 24th overall in yards per rush (5.2) and 38th overall in rush yards per game (191.7).

The defense has been very stout this year for the Spartans. They yield 21.4 points per game to opponents and lead the nation in opponent rush play percentage (39.67%). It seems unlikely that Purdue will run the ball as they average a mere 80.5 rushing yards per game. The Spartans are 6-0-2 against the spread this year and 4-0-1 against the spread in their last five conference games.

Why Purdue Could Cover the Spread

The Purdue Boilermakers will look to get back on track at home as they have not won a home game since Week 4 against Illinois. Last week, the Boilermakers traveled to Nebraska and won 28-23 in a game where the defense stepped up immensely. Purdue forced four interceptions and held Nebraska to just 21:22 time of possession. The Boilermaker defense is the strength of this football team, ranking 9th in opponent points per game (17.1) and 15th in opponent yards per game (315.6). They have not allowed over 30 points all season.

The Boilermaker offense is centered around the passing game. They rank 8th in the nation in pass play percentage (59.68%) and completion percentage (70%). They rank 7th in passes per game (43.8) and 14th in pass yards per game (307.1). Senior quarterback Aidan O'Connell has thrown for 1,551 yards and nine touchdowns with a completion percentage of 71%. Purdue is 6-2 against the spread versus a team with a winning record.

Final Michigan State-Purdue Prediction & Pick

One could make a case for either team in this matchup as they are coming off hard-fought victories. If Michigan State has a hangover from the big rivalry win last weekend, then they could be in trouble. Purdue's ineffectiveness in running the ball may hurt if they cannot get the passing game going. This will lead to several three and outs, resulting in the Spartans chewing up the clock with Walker III running the ball. However, Michigan State is the better team, and I will have to side with them in this one. Also, Purdue is just 1-6 against the spread in their last seven games at home. Lay the points with the Spartans to remain undefeated.

FINAL MICHIGAN STATE-PURDUE PREDICTION & PICK: Michigan State Spartans -3 (-115)
