When former Indianapolis Colts quarterback Andrew Luck announced his retirement, it sent shockwaves throughout the NFL. Luck retiring suddenly in the prime of his career had massive implications for the Colts and the 2019 season, but it also greatly impacted a popular Twitter account called Capt. Andrew Luck.

The account was created years ago and imagined Luck as a civil war captain writing letters home to his mother. The account quickly became very popular, amassing over half a million followers.

As soon as the retirement news hit, all eyes turned to the account to see what he would say. In its first tweet since the news broke, the account confirmed it would be stepping away just like its namesake.

Now, the man behind the account has penned a farewell note for SI's MMQB.

“I hope this letter finds you all well. Life on the family farm is just as I remembered. I have been up at the crack of dawn each day, sometimes crowing before the rooster. Oh, how he hates to be beaten. The hogs were so happy to see me, they could barely contain themselves in the pin,” the letter begins.

The account was a great source of NFL humor the past few seasons, and it will be missed by many. He concluded with this farewell:

“You soldiers, your unit, is greater than the sum of its parts. Each one of you has the fearlessness, heart and grit to make a difference on the field. Yet, the group working as one wins the battle.

Please, take care of yourselves and one another.”
