Adam Vinatieri is undoubtedly one of the best kickers to ever play in the NFL. However, his career may finally be winding down; the prospect of staying with the Indianapolis Colts may be more tenuous at this point.
Mike Wells of ESPN wrote about the current state of the Colts' kicker situation. Chase McLaughlin has done a phenomenal job as the team's kicker situation is one that has been uncertain over the course of the season. While the Colts can still pick up the future Hall of Famer, all the signs point to them going in a new direction with McLaughlin.
Colts GM Chris Ballard has been impressed enough that they offered the rookie kicker an extended contract that would run through the 2020 season. However, they were coy as to whether they will start anew with McLaughlin.
“We'll see. We liked him,” Ballard said. “You come in and you have to follow Adam Vinatieri, you've got a little something to you. He's got a really calm demeanor; he's got a process that he goes through to kick. We like Chase.”
The kicker himself is happy to just be given the chance to compete. Moreover, he didn't deny that he thought about taking over from Vinatieri.
“I can't say I didn't think about it,” McLaughlin said about replacing the NFL's all-time leading scorer. “But again, honestly, every time you kick in a regular-season game, even preseason, it's important and every kick counts. I came in and tried to do the best I could and impress everyone here.”
Vinatieri had a terrible 2019. His scoring numbers harshly fell as he only completed 68% of his 68% of his field-goal attempts. His accuracy in scoring extra points also took a dive, only making 78% of his shots. These numbers would make it difficult for a lot of NFL teams to justify signing him.
