The Dallas Cowboys cut ties with quarterbacks Garrett Gilbert and Ben DiNucci on Tuesday as part of roster trim downs. On Wednesday, they claimed quarterback Will Grier who was released by the Carolina Panthers.

Grier was drafted in the third round just back in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Panthers. With Sam Darnold cemented in as the starter in Carolina and P.J. Walker serving as the backup, the Panthers opted not to keep a third quarterback this season.

Meanwhile, the Cowboys have Dak Prescott and Cooper Rush but the decision to add Grier could mean Rush could slide down to the No. 3 spot on the depth chart once Grier has a good grasp on the offense.

The best case scenario for the Cowboys is that the backup quarterback spot isn't in the spotlight this year as they keep their fingers crossed that Prescott stays healthy.

Dak suffered a gruesome ankle injury that ended his season last year and then backup Andy Dalton had to fill in. DiNucci saw some playing time as well when Dalton ended up injured and it set in motion a disastrous season for the Cowboys.

Adding Grier gives the Cowboys some insurance should anything happen to Prescott as they likely don't feel great about their chances if Rush is under center for any extended period of time.

Grier hasn't seen much time on the field, throwing for just 228 yards in his career with no touchdowns and 4 interceptions.
