The Dallas Cowboys are still negotiating with Ezekiel Elliott to try to get him back on the field by Sunday. Dallas “made progress” with Elliott on Monday, but there are still some walls to climb over in the deal.

Throughout discussions, Dallas has been vocal that they don't want to pay their All-Pro running back more than what Todd Gurley received prior to the 2018 season. The Cowboys don't want to front-load Elliott's new deal and pay him a lump sum in the next couple of seasons.

Since the beginning of training camp, Elliott has remained away from the team in hopes he can land a lucrative extension with Dallas. Elliott seems keen on receiving a deal that makes him the highest-paid running back in the NFL, while the Cowboys are reluctant to give him a deal that nets him more than Gurley's annual salary of $14.375 million.

Ever since Elliott was drafted by the Cowboys in 2016, he has been the focal point of their offense. Dallas is one of the few teams in the NFL who predicates their entire offense on winning in the trenches and heavily running the football.

Coming into this season, the Cowboys running back is entering the second-to-last year on his rookie deal. Elliott is set to make just $3.8 million in 2019 and $9.1 million in 2020.

Considering the number of touches he gets each season, Elliott is trying to secure an extension that provides himself with some insurance. The Cowboys will likely need to get a deal done in the next couple of days if they hope to have Elliott against the New York Giants on Sunday.
