The Dallas Cowboys have placed the exclusive franchise tag on Dak Prescott according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

By using the exclusive franchise tag on him, the Cowboys will be on the hook for $33 million this season. The Cowboys could have used the non-exclusive tag on him that would have paid him $28 million, but other teams would have been able to negotiate a long term deal with him.

If a team would have agreed to a deal with Prescott and the Cowboys wouldn't have matched, Dallas would have received two first-round draft picks.

Russell Wilson is currently the league's highest-paid quarterback at $35 million per season and all signs point towards Prescott wanting more than that. The two sides couldn't get come to an agreement though, and this is the right step to keep him around for another year.

The big question now for the Cowboys is what will happen with Amari Cooper. With the new CBA, there is only one tag that can be used, so if Cooper will be back, it's going to have to happen through an agreed-upon extension.

Wide receiver Julio Jones has the highest average salary among wide receivers at $22 million followed by Michael Thomas who sits at $19.2 million.

If the Cowboys were to lose Amari Cooper after spending a first-round draft pick on him that would be a bit shocking, so it still seems that all signs point towards something getting done with Cooper. If Cooper does walk, the Cowboys would need to be aggressive trying to find his replacement.
