Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys have made plenty of comments about his contract this offseason, but apparently neither side has said much to one another. Just a few weeks until free agency, Dallas reveals they haven't spoken to Prescott about a contract since September.
Before the 2019 season, Prescott was hoping to get a long-term extension from the team. According to multiple reports, Prescott turned down an offer from the Cowboys that would've given him $33 million annually.
Throughout the season, the Cowboys tabled talks with Prescott and it appears that those talks haven't picked back up again. Recently, the NFL and NFLPA agreed to extend the franchise-tag deadline from Feb. 25 to Feb. 27. Therefore, the Cowboys could choose to use the franchise tag on Prescott as soon as Thursday.
Despite not having an extension in place, Prescott had the best season of his career in 2019 for the Cowboys. The former fourth-round pick threw for a career-high 4,902 yards, 30 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.
While Dallas failed to make the playoffs, the brunt of the blame shouldn't be placed on Prescott. Even though they haven't spoken to him or his agent, Stephen Jones — the Cowboys executive VP — made it clear that the team isn't entertaining the idea of moving on from Prescott.
“Dak’s our quarterback,” Jones said via Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News. “He’s our quarterback for the future. We have nothing but the greatest respect for him. . . . There’s no thoughts like that.”
The lack of communication between Prescott and the Cowboys is definitely a bit concerning. However, there is plenty of time between now and next season for a deal to get done.
