When Jason Witten hung up the cleats from the Dallas Cowboys and put on the headset to be an analyst on Monday Night Football, it surprised a lot of people. It seemed to surprise even more people when there were rumors that Witten might leave the booth midseason to rejoin the Cowboys who looked like they needed a tight end.
Witten appearing on Monday back in Frisco for the Jason Witten College Football Man of the Year award ceremony was asked about how seriously he thought about returning to the Cowboys. Witten admitted that he really missed football, but it wasn't ever a real possibility that he would return, via Clarence E. Hill Jr. of the Star-Telegram.
“It would have been hard to do that. In season, the challenge of that,” Witten said. “Those guys did that work. They deserve what they had last year. They put in the time. They were 3-5. They battled back. For me that is where the sense of accomplishment comes from, not catching a pass on 3rd and 7. It’s all the work that goes into that that motivates me that I take gratification from. It’s doing all the work to get there, not just to come in.”
“That wouldn’t have been right to come back in the middle of that even in the midst of wanting to be part of a playoff run or much I see myself pulling for them. That wouldn’t have been a real possibility.”
Witten will be back in the booth next year for ESPN, and it should only be a few more years until he is Canton. In his career, Witten hauled in 1,152 catches for 12,448 yards and 68 touchdowns.
