Dallas Cowboys tight end Jason Witten is a good player in the National Football League. So good, in fact, some Tennessee Volunteers fans assume his ability on the gridiron should easily transfer over to being an excellent head coach.

Yes. It is all incredibly odd, but there was enough push from the disenfranchised college football fan base that Jason Witten had to address rumors that he would retire to take the Tennessee job.

Per John Machota:

“I feel too good to consider something like that at this point.” Next year? “I dont see that.”

For those unaware, Witten has zero head coaching experience. For him to be considered to fill a head coaching vacancy just because he went to school at the place and is a good football player is as about as silly as drinking expired milk.

You can look across a slew of sports for examples, but rare is the former great player turned head coach (without coaching experience) resulting in a lot of success. Usually, with a few exceptions of course, a player needs to spend some time as an assistant before taking over an NFL franchise or college football program.

Nevertheless, here we are in the year 2017, and a Dallas Cowboys not-yet-retired tight end is forced to address what are glorified message board rumors. The Internet can sometimes be a sincerely silly place to visit.

Never change, Internet.

As for the Vols, for the sake of anarchy, they should just go full-circle and rehire Lane Kiffin.
