Finally, some good news on the injury front for the Dallas Cowboys.

On Friday morning, Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy provided insight into the status of linebacker Leighton Vander Esch, who has been out since breaking his collarbone in the team's Week 1 loss to the Los Angeles Rams.

The Cowboys designated Vander Esch to return to practice on Wednesday, and he took part in padded practice on Thursday.

Three weeks may sound like a quick recovery timeline for a broken collarbone, but a) these are football players with extreme pain tolerances and b) it is, Vander Esch's head coach acknowledged.

“I would say he’s ahead of schedule,” McCarthy told reporters in his press conference on Thursday. “He’s definitely champing at the bit to get back, there’s no question about that. But obviously there’s medical procedures and process that he must go through and clear. But the doctors and the trainers feel really good about where he is. If I would go off of my personal communication with him, he would’ve played in Week 2. So he’s really pushing it and wants to get back. We have to make sure he’s clear and ready to go.”

McCarthy added that “the way he comes in tomorrow” — meaning how he feels on Friday — will be crucial in assessing whether Vander Esch can play against the winless New York Giants.
