Head coach Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys are currently in the midst of mandatory offseason workouts in preparation for the upcoming 2024-25 NFL season, which is set to begin in September. The Cowboys overall had a successful regular season in 2023-24 but their epic meltdown against the Green Bay Packers in the Wild Card round of the NFC playoffs left a bitter taste in some fans' mouths and ignited some calls for McCarthy to officially enter the hot seat.

One player who missed most of the season for the Cowboys last year was star cornerback Trevon Diggs, who tore his ACL at a Cowboys practice just a few weeks into the campaign and was kept out for the season as a result.

However, if the latest reports are any indication, Diggs seems to be progressing nicely toward a full return for the upcoming year.

“Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy said CB Trevon Diggs ‘looks great' in his return from a torn ACL. There seems a real chance Diggs will start training camp on PUP list, but “he’s in a good spot,” reported NFL insider Michael Gehlken of the Dallas Morning News on his account on X, the social media platform formerly referred to as Twitter.

PUP of course refers to “Physically unable to perform.” Training camp will get underway later this summer.

McCarthy wasn't the only member of the Cowboys organization to have a hopeful perspective on Diggs' possible return as of late.

Recently, assistant head coach and defensive backs coach Al Harris spoke on the presence of both Diggs and DaRon Bland, who led the league in interceptions a season ago, when they are both healthy on the field.

I'm fired up,” Harris said, per Garrett Podell of CBS Sports. “I'm sorry man. Seriously, I'm fired up. When you can get guys that you've groomed and coached, mentored and you see your work on tape, that's all I can ask for as a coach. ‘Look I'm asking you to do this, I know your job is hard.' You go out and do it, that's all [why] I'm fired up to see those guys out there together.”

Can the Cowboys finally break through?

The Cowboys have been experiencing more regular season success than usual over the last few years but have still been unable to parlay that into any real deep forays into the postseason. In 2022-23, it was a horrible performance from starting quarterback Dak Prescott that did the team in during their playoffs loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Prescott wasn't much better in the Cowboys' loss to the Packers this past postseason, but the main story in that game was the Cowboys' defense (or lack thereof), which was eviscerated by Green Bay starting quarterback Jordan Love and certainly could have used the services of a player like Diggs out there on the field.

In any case, with Diggs progressing toward a return and the rest of the Cowboys seemingly healthy, it would appear that Dallas won't get a much better chance than they will have this year at finally breaking through and hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.
