The Dallas Cowboys haven't done enough to bring running back Ezekiel Elliott back from Cabo to Arlington.

As the regular season nears, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has begun to accept that Elliott likely won't be back in action for the opener against the New York Giants on September 8th. Jones told reporters on Thursday night that he was resigned to the reality of Elliott missing regular season games, but expressed confidence the two-time Pro Bowler would return to the team during the regular season.

While the possibility of missing games is looking more likely than ever, the Cowboys are still doing what they can do get him back. According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, the team is still actively engaged in contract talks with the Elliott.

“Jerry Jones says a lot of things. Yes, the Cowboys are preparing as if Ezekiel Elliott will miss games. Meanwhile, they still have been in negotiations with Zeke Elliot's agent and still are trying to get a deal done. There isn't any significant progress yet; they still have not yet made an offer to put above Todd Gurley's highest paid running back.

“While Jerry Jones says this [Elliott missing games] in front of everyone publicly, behind the scenes, he is still trying to get a deal done.”

The contract negotiations between Elliott's camp and the Cowboys have dominated NFL storylines during training camp. It may not near an end anytime soon, but it appears the Cowboys have a capable replacement player — at least for the time being — in rookie Tony Pollard.
