Although it was a disappointing 2017 NFL season for the Dallas Cowboys, their expectations for next year are still higher than ever. Fortunately, executive vice president Stephen Jones is confident the team can reclaim their crown in the NFC East, and possibly do more.

The Cowboys took many by surprise when they decided not to make any drastic changes to the coaching staff. However, Jones believes the team should warrant Super Bowl expectations for next season depending on what they do over the next few months, according to Saad Yousuf of the Dallas Morning News:

“We’ve got to continue to improve,” Jones said. “We’ve got a big couple of months coming up, the next three months, between unrestricted free agency and the draft. Will McClay and the coaching staff and Jerry and I really got to roll up our sleeves and improve our football team. If we do that, we think we’ve got a great opportunity to compete for a Super Bowl championship.”

Jones also acknowledged that in order to do so, they will first need to get through the reigning Super Bowl Champions in the Philadelphia Eagles.

“I’m certainly pleased with our football team. We were able now to really get in there and grind our personnel and really look at what we have as a team and where we are and at the same time, know that we have to be better if we are going to compete with a team like the Eagles. We certainly feel like we can.”

The Cowboys took a huge step back amidst their tumultuous season that revealed a number of glaring personnel issues. As a result, Dallas has some major decisions to make this offseason if they are to follow up on their expectations.

It is no secret that the Cowboys have some major improvements to make on the offensive side of the ball outside of head coach Jason Garret's run-heavy approach. That said, they may need to find some better player personnel to better fit their new scheme.
