Earlier Tuesday, the Dallas Cowboys appeared to be ready to announce that they had reached an agreement with Randy Gregory to bring him back to Big D. Hours later, news broke that Gregory was instead leaving the Cowboys for the Denver Broncos. According to ESPN reporter Ed Werder, a clause in the contract with the Cowboys was the key reason for the change of heart.

Werder's sources indicate that Gregory objected to the contract the Cowboys had drawn up. Reportedly, when a deal had been reached the night prior, a clause that indicates the contract would be voided if Gregory were to be fined/suspended for any drug offense or violation of the NFL personal conduct policy, was not originally there.

The Cowboys former star defensive lineman was previously suspended for 14 games in 2016 for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. He was later suspended for the entire 2017 season, two games in 2018 and the entire 2019 season following multiple infractions.

Knowing the lineman's propensity for getting himself into trouble, the clause is understandable from the Cowboys point of view. However, if Werder's reporting is accurate, it's not surprising that Gregory was caught off guard with the late change in the contract.
