The Chicago Cubs have been rather quiet in free agency up to this point. While there have been rumors of a push for Carlos Correa, signs are now pointing to Correa returning to the Houston Astros. However, it looks like the Cubs might have finally made a splash by signing Japanese star Seiya Suzuki.

Reports first started trickling out from Japanese media that Suzuki had agreed on a five-year, $85 million deal with Chicago. David Kaplan of NBC Sports Chicago says it's a five-year, $70 million deal. While there has been no official confirmation from the Cubs yet, it sure seems as if this is basically a done deal, and we just have to wait to see the specifics.

Suzuki is 27 years old and has been a star over in Japan for quite some time. He hit 38 home runs and drove in 87 with a slash line of .321/.435/.647 across two teams in 2021, and he has been putting up similar numbers for the last six seasons.

The Cubs are in rebuild mode right now after trading away most of their core pieces last season, but they did add Marcus Stroman before the lockout and are now bringing in a Japanese star in his prime to bolster the outfield. While Chicago still needs a lot more work done on this roster in order to compete for the playoffs, this is a good step. Not getting Correa (assuming he returns to Houston or goes elsewhere) is a bummer, but this isn't a bad consolation prize.
