Bryce Harper will be the talk of the MLB offseason as free agency begins heating up and there are quite a few teams that would love the chance to sign him. At this point in time, however, there are only a few teams that are expected to have a chance to convince him to sign with them.

Over the past couple of years, the Chicago Cubs have emerged as a potential suitor for Harper. From one of his best friends, Kris Bryant, to his apparent love for the city of Chicago, Harper seems like a guy that would fit well in the Windy City.

Recent reports have stated that the Cubs may not be a legitimate contender to sign Harper. At least one MLB insider thinks that those reports could be off.

According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, the Cubs are one of three teams that have a legitimate shot to sign Harper this offseason. The other two teams that he mentioned were the Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Yankees.

Theo Epstein and the Cubs could certainly use the kind of offensive power that Harper would bring to the plate. They struggled with consistency last season and Harper would fit in perfectly.

The only issue for the Cubs could be the amount of money that Harper wants. Chicago has quite a bit of money already tied up, but there is a good chance that they could find ways to free up enough to sign Harper.

Simply thinking about a “big three” of Bryant, Harper, and Anthony Rizzo would strike fear in opposing rotations. Finding ways to pitch to all three of them would be nearly impossible. Add in Javier Baez and the Cubs would practically have an All-Star squad in their lineup.

Expect to hear more rumors come out in the near future about Harper. The Cubs are a team that could use him and it would not be shocking to see Epstein make a run at bringing him to Chicago.
