The use of medical marijuana has continued to divide the opinion of many, including members of the sports community. It is still part of the prohibited drugs list, although there are already some players from different professional sports leagues that have admitted to use it in the past for medicinal purposes.

One of its advocates is former NBA player Al Harrington, who believes in its curing elements, and thinks that it can be used as a natural substitute for some medicines. He sat down and had a Q&A with former commissioner David Stern, via Uninterrupted, and asked him about this take on it.

Surprisingly, the 75-year-old revealed that for him, it should be allowed in the league for players to use, as long as it’s prescribed by a doctor. He then added that it should be legalized around the world if it’s going to be used to cure different ailments and conditions.

“I'm now at the point where, personally, I think [marijuana] probably should be removed from the ban list,” Stern said. “I think there is universal agreement that marijuana for medical purposes should be completely legal.”

Since 1930, marijuana has been regulated in the U.S. and resulted in having the Uniform State Narcotic Drug Act, where it includes articles about when Cannabis is allowed to be used. However, it has already become an alternative medicine for some patients, which led to its legalization in some states, just like how it has been in other countries around the world for years now.

It remains to be seen if it will ever be legalized in professional sports. However, one thing that’s certain at this point is that it will take a lot of discussions first, which could even take years before its legalization advances. For now, it’s anybody’s guess how it will be considered in the future, but is definitely something worth keeping an eye on.
