The Arizona Diamondbacks are 29-33 on the season after a 9-3 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday that saw starter Jordan Montgomery get chased after just two innings of work. The Diamondbacks' starter is now dealing with the fallout from the resulting boos amid the team's frustrating start.

Recently, Montgomery and fellow starter Blake Snell dropped truth bombs on a surprising lamentation on what may be causing their difficulties. A concerning injury update to another starting pitcher was also revealed.

Now, the question is whether the imposing 6-foot-6 left-hander will make good on his immense promise this season in time for it to make a difference in Manager Torey Lovullo's team's season.

Diamondbacks starter's late start

Montgomery didn't officially sign with Lovullo's team until March 29 on a one-year, $25 million deal, which caused Montgomery to lament his lack of spring training reps in a recent interview.

The 228 pound veteran's ERA is now more than twice what it was last season with the Texas Rangers prompting fans to make their unpleasant feelings known on Wednesday. Montgomery gave up seven hits, six earned runs and three bases on balls during the day's losing effort which led to the boo showers.

Fans react to Montgomery struggles

Fans were split in the comments section as to whether Montgomery has what it takes to succeed as baseball approaches its All-Star Break and second half of the season.

“Just shut him down for a few months to work through whatever is bothering him,” one exasperated fan stated.

“Cardinals made the right decision,” another fan added about St. Louis' decision to pass on a rumored reunion with their former star pitcher.

Last season, Montgomery thrilled and delighted Rangers fans with a sub-3.00 ERA during a season in which he gave up 61 hits in just over 67 innings pitched. Montgomery is missed by Rangers fans according to at least one commenter on X.

“Hey, we will gladly take him if y'all don't win him,” a Rangers fan account stated about Montgomery, who has nevertheless underachieved with Torey Lovullo's team this season.

Montgomery told PHNX Sports he has a new appreciation for spring training, which he missed this past spring, in terms of how it prepares pitchers for the rigors and difficulties of the regular season.
