Amid his ongoing controversies for abuse and alleged sexual misconduct, many HBCU supporters question if institutions such as Howard University should publicly rebuke Sean “Diddy” Combs by revoking his honorary degree and giving money he donated back to him.

Surveillance footage from the InterContinental Hotel in Century City, Los Angeles, obtained by CNN last week, shows an altercation between Combs and his former girlfriend Cassie Ventura in 2016. This incident supports her lawsuit, which was settled last year. The video captures Combs chasing Cassie down a hallway.

He encounters her in the elevator lobby, grabs her neck, pushes her to the ground, kicks her, snatches her bags, and drags her back down the hallway by her sweatshirt. Combs then returns her bags to the hotel room while Cassie tries to reach a hotel phone by the elevators. He later appears to push her into a corner and throws an object at her out of view.

Combs issued an apology on Sunday afternoon via a video on his social media accounts following the release of the disturbing video.

“I take full responsibility for my actions in that video. I was disgusted then when I did it. I’m disgusted now.”

On Tuesday, another lawsuit was filed against Combs by Crystal McKinney, per CBS News. The lawsuit was filed under the NYC Gender Motivated Violence Act, enabling victims of gender-based violence in the city to sue their abusers, irrespective of when the abuse occurred. The deadline for filing suits under this act is 2025. In the lawsuit, McKinney accused Combs of drugging and sexually assaulting her in 2003.

The recent updates contribute to the increasing number of alleged criminal misconduct cases exposed involving Combs. Because of this, there has been a push for HBCUs such as Howard University to disassociate with Combs. Combs attended Howard University until his sophomore year before eventually dropping out to pursue his hip-hop career. Still, Combs has often been celebrated as an alumnus of the institution and even was awarded an honorary doctorate as he delivered the commencement address in 2014.

He also pledged to donate $1 million to Howard University and Jackson State University in 2022 at the BET Awards when he was honored with a lifetime achievement award.

“Before I leave, I want to donate a million dollars to Howard University and also I'm going to drop another million dollars on Deion Sanders and Jackson State because we should play for us!”

Combs fulfilled his promise by delivering the pledged $1 million to Jackson State. He attended the 2023 MEAC/SWAC Challenge to hand over the check. Additionally, he showed up at Howard University's homecoming events, gave the institution a $1 million check, and performed some of his songs.

“As someone who attended Howard University and values the transformative experience of historically Black colleges, it remains crucial that we strive to protect and uphold their legacy,” he said in October per comments obtained by WJLA

Calls to revoke Combs' honorary degree have intensified. Change.org shared a video on their platform showcasing Diddy alongside other celebrities with a past of misconduct who have received calls for revocation of their honorary degrees such as Donald Trump, Kanye West, and Bill Cosby

“Universities generally use honorary degrees to recognize a person's contributions to society. But, more and more, people are using change.org to recent these degrees for harmful behavior,” the voiceover artist said in the video

It is uncertain whether Combs will have his honorary degree revoked and his behavior rebuked by Howard and other HBCUs. However, the discussion should definitely take place.
