Miami Dolphins rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is dealing with a thumb injury on his throwing hand.

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network is reporting that Tagovailoa suffered the ailment in practice after jamming his left thumb on a helmet.

If Tua Tagovailoa can't play in Week 12 against the New York Jets, the Dolphins will go back to veteran gunslinger Ryan Fitzpatrick, who started the first six games of the season for Miami.

The Dolphins are coming off a bad loss in Week 11 to the Denver Broncos. Miami head coach Brian Flores, who has done a great job turning the franchise around in just his second year at the helm, actually benched Tagovailoa for Fitzpatrick late in the game.

However, Flores told Dolphins reporters this week that Tagovailoa is still his starter, though those comments came before the rookie jammed his thumb.

Miami is 6-4 on the season and in second place in the AFC East standings. Whether the team starts Tagovailoa or Fitzpatrick, the Dolphins should be able to defeat the Jets since New York is 0-10 on the season and a walking disaster on both sides of the ball.

In five games this season, Tagovailoa has thrown for 602 yards and six touchdowns. The 22-year-old is 3-1 as a starter and hasn't thrown an interception yet.
