The Philadelphia Eagles should be fairly pleased with the progress quarterback Carson Wentz is making following knee surgery. Just six months since his procedure, Wentz has already progressed to 7-on-7 drills during practice and has a decent chance of living up to his word of being ready for Week 1.

However, Wentz isn’t ready to play just yet and admits he still has one “last hurdle” to clear in the form of live contact before he’s all good to go. But he doesn’t quite know when he’ll be cleared for that all-important step.

“It’s hard to say I need X to be ready,” Wentz said, per Zach Berman of Philly.com. “I think, at the end of the day, I just need to be cleared for contact. Like you see out here, I’m doing quite a bit. I think, come camp, I’ll keep progressing and doing more and more. To finally be cleared of that contact issue is really the last hurdle, and I feel I’ll be ready whenever that is.”

Wentz still has over two and a half months to go before the start of the season, which will be a tight window in order to get himself fully ready. And that still depends on when he’ll be cleared for contact, which might not come until the start of the preseason.

But the Eagles have no reason to rush Wentz if they don’t feel he’s quite ready for contact. After all, they still have Super Bowl MVP Nick Foles waiting in the wings should Wentz take a little longer than expected to make his return.
