Unrestricted free-agent running back and punt return specialist Darren Sproles will decide on his NFL future in May.

At a memorabilia signing event at the Ocean City Music Pier on March 31, Sproles told The Press of Atlantic City's David Weinberg (via Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper) he has been in discussions with his most recent team, the Philadelphia Eagles.

“We've had some talks,” Sproles told Weinberg. “I'm going to wait until May before I make my decision. We'll have to see.”

Eagles head coach Doug Pederson told Vaughn Johnson of the team's official website on March 26 he understands Sproles' predicament. This marks the second consecutive offseason where Sproles is weighing the pros and cons of retirement.

I can't speak for Darren, obviously, and this is his time to make these decisions, but I would love to have Darren back.

I get it. I was there once and we'll respect his decision when it comes.

Pederson also told Johnson that the timing of Sproles' decision has no negative impact on the organization. The Eagles are confident Sproles will prepare thoroughly should he decide to take the field again.

The once lightning-quick Sproles has battled several injuries with the Eagles the past two seasons. He played in just three games during the 2017 NFL season — the same year the Eagles won Super Bowl LII — because of a broken arm and torn ACL. He produced just 61 yards on 15 carries in those three contests.

Prior to training camp last year, Sproles announced that the 2018 NFL season would be his last. Sproles sat out 11 weeks last year because of an injured hamstring. He finished with 363 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns.

The 35-year-old Sproles has amassed 11,177 all-purpose yards and 62 touchdowns during his 14-year NFL career.
