Josh McCown is staying in Philadelphia and making some history in the process.
Adam Schefter reported the Eagles are signing McCown to their practice squad, and the 41-year-old will thus etch his name into the record books:
“Philadelphia is signing 41-year-old QB Josh McCown to its practice squad and making him oldest practice squad player in NFL history, league sources tell ESPN,” Schefter tweeted. “McCown will live in Texas, make $12,000 a week and serve as the Eagles’ emergency QB.”
Josh McCown served as Philadelphia's backup during the 2019 campaign, and was even forced into action when Carson Wentz left the team's Wild Card matchup with the Seattle Seahawks after suffering a concussion.
The veteran performed admirably, completing 18 of 24 passes for 175 yards. Yet, Josh McCown showed plenty of rust, holding the ball too long in the pocket and struggling to gauge the pressure. Seattle sacked McCown six times, eventually holding on for a 17-9 victory.
Philadelphia enters the 2020 campaign with Wentz back under center, and second-round pick Jalen Hurts figures to serve as the backup and a hybrid offensive weapon. However, the Eagles are going with Josh McCown as an insurance policy in the event the quarterback room succumbs to injury.
The Eagles have had a rather strange offseason, opting mostly for defensive upgrades–notably trading for star cornerback Darius Slay–over improving depth at the wide receiver position. Philly's offense has taken additional hits with injuries to the offensive line, including Lane Johnson and Andre Dillard.
Head coach Doug Pederson would prefer Wentz to remain healthy throughout the year, but Josh McCown will be ready in case something catastrophic occurs.
