The Philadelphia Eagles have swooped in and made a move to bolster an injury-riddled secondary. With the NFL trade deadline inching closer, the Eagles on Monday acquired veteran safety Kevin Byard from the Tennessee Titans, league sources told Ian Rapoport of NFL Network.

Philadelphia traded safety Terrell Edmunds and fifth- and sixth-round picks in 2024 for the veteran Titans safety, league sources told Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

The Eagles, who have four defensive backs, including safeties Reed Blankenship and Justin Evans, currently injured, had reportedly been exploring the trade market for safeties ahead of the Oct. 31 deadline. Philadelphia had even been linked to Arizona Cardinals safety Budda Baker, who requested a trade back in the spring.

It makes sense then, that the Eagles finally pulled the trigger on deal for a safety. And not just any safety.

Byard, who was born in Philadelphia, has been named to two Pro Bowls and earned All-Pro honors twice in his eight-year NFL career. Byard tallied a career-high eight interceptions back in 2017 and ranks ninth on the active interceptions list, just behind new Eagles teammate Darius Slay.

Even sweeter for Philadelphia is the fact that Byard, who was paid $7 million of his $11 million 2023 base salary in a signing bonus, comes relatively cheap.

Byard will certainly be a boon to an Eagles defense that has ranked 18th in the league in passing yards allowed per game after leading the entire NFL in that statistic during their run to the Super Bowl last year. Meanwhile, the Titans, 2-4 and in last place in the AFC South, could be jumpstarting their rebuild at this year's NFL trade deadline.
