The Philadelphia Eagles are focused on continuing their rebuild this offseason. They acquired multiple free agents and re-signed key pieces of their roster. Now, the Birds are looking at a much bigger free agent: safety Tyrann Mathieu.
The team held a virtual visit with Mathieu, and according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Philadelphia is a prime landing spot for the free agent. Rapoport tweeted the news Thursday afternoon.
Sources: Free agent DB Tyrann Mathieu had a virtual visit with the #Eagles, as Philly has emerged as a prime location for one of the top free agents. The Honey Badger visited the #Saints this week, and now has done a zoom with Philly. His market is heating up.

As Rapoport noted, the New Orleans Saints are also extremely interested in the defensive back. Mathieu visited the Saints Tuesday while in New Orleans with family and friends.
The New Orleans native was a third-round pick out of none other than Louisiana State University back in 2013. While he would be returning home with the Saints, the Eagles might be a better career move for the star safety.
Philadelphia is undoubtedly in a better position than the Saints heading into the 2022-2023 season. The team finished 9-8 and strutted a short playoff stint in their first official rebuild season.
The Saints also finished the regular season at 9-8. However, they play in a slightly more difficult division and are further behind in their rebuild. Jumping from the Kansas City Chiefs, recent Super Bowl champions, to a patchwork team is already a big move. Philadelphia would be much less of an adjustment than New Orleans.
Mathieu would quickly become the Eagles' starting safety and work alongside 2021 Pro Bowler Darius Slay and new Philadelphia linebacker Hasson Reddick.
