The Philadelphia Eagles fired head coach Doug Pederson on Monday, which could be reassuring for quarterback Carson Wentz in the long run.
Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reports Pederson's dismissal “significantly increases chances of Carson Wentz staying in Philadelphia” amid trade rumors and questions regarding Wentz's commitment to the franchise.
Reports surfaced last week suggesting the relationship between Wentz and Pederson was irreparable, hence speculation about Wentz's future in Philly.
But Fowler suggests the decision to fire Pederson is indicative of the Eagles' plan to move forward with Wentz as the franchise quarterback, something general manager Howie Roseman alluded to during postseason press conferences.
However, it seems Roseman would be under just as much pressure as Pederson, if not more.
One of the reasons Wentz's struggles were so vociferous in 2020 was the lack of talent around him on the offensive side of the football. The Eagles had a number of injuries both in the trenches and at the skill positions, with the latter being especially damning considering Roseman hardly chose to spend at all in free agency.
The result was a season in which Wentz averaged just 6.0 yards gained per pass attempt, threw 15 interceptions and was sacked 50 times in just 12 games. He was benched in favor of rookie Jalen Hurts, who showed flashes during his time under center. Philly ultimately finished the season 4-11-1.
There is still reason to believe Wentz can rediscover his old form. After all, he is just one year removed from leading a depleted Eagles team to a 9-7 record and a playoff appearance.
However, if the Eagles are indeed going in this direction, it is now Roseman who could be on the hot seat as he bears the responsibility of making significant offensive upgrades. This is a huge offseason for the future of the franchise.
