28 Years Later is on the way as production has begun.
The Knowledge reported that movement on the film has started. This is part of the post-apocalyptic 28 Days Later franchise's trilogy.
2002's 28 Days Later starred Cillian Murphy as Jim, a bike courier who wakes up from a coma and finds that life has abruptly changed. Society has collapsed due to a deadly virus. The film also starred Naomie Harris, Christopher Eccleston, Megan Burns, and Brendan Gleeson. It was written by Alex Garland and directed by Danny Boyle.
Another film, 28 Weeks Later, was released five years afterwards in 2007. However, this movie didn't star Murphy. It had director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo and starred Robert Carlyle in the lead role.
Boyle is working with Garland, and Murphy is back in this one to bring this new film to zombie-filled life.
Details on 28 Years Later
Y! Movies UK stated that it was initially going to be called 28 Months Later to align with the corresponding movies. However, there's been too long of a time gap. So, 28 Years Later seemed much more suitable.
Additionally, this new film will have a Part 2. That said, Boyle is only attached to directing the first film now. There are rumors that Nia DaCosta (The Marvels) might be trying to land the gig for the second installment.

Of course, Murphy will return as Jim.
In an interview with Deadline, Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman Tom Rothman said of the new film, “I think I've made eight movies with Danny Boyle, and I hold him in the Pantheon, and we have his new 28 Days trilogy. It's 28 Years Later, but not in any way a literal sequel. Great cast, Aaron-Johnson and Jodie Comer.”
Regarding Murphy's return to the film, he said, “Yes, but in a surprising way and in a way that grows, let me put it that way.”
The Oppenheimer actor talked about what the role means to him. “I've always said I would love to be involved because that movie changed everything for me,” he said. “I have great affection for it and for those guys, [Garland and Boyle]. I never watch my own films, except that one.”
He added, “It's always on around Halloween, and during the pandemic, people were constantly sending me clips. And I've shown it to my kids. It's really stood up, even though it's 22 years old now, so I'm really thrilled that we'll get the band back together to make this one.”
As for 28 Years Later, it's set to come out next summer on June 20, 2025.
